The International Rett Syndrome Foundation (IRSF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing families with the latest medical information, aggressively funding the most promising research, offering meaningful family support, raising public awareness and advocating for those living with Rett syndrome. Rett syndrome is a neurological disorder, most prevalent in females, caused by a genetic mutation on the X chromosome. A child is born every 5 hours with this disorder. Initial signs of Rett syndrome typically appear between 6-18 months of age, where normal development regresses, hindering the progression of sensory, emotional, motor and autonomic function. Seizures, irregular breathing, curvature of the spine, immobility, speech inability and minimal hand coordination are all common occurrences associated with Rett syndrome.
